his last week has been nothing but re-watching, in the spirit of its release of season 3 today I will be reviewing Golden Kamuy’s first season!
In Hokkaido, the far northern lands of Japan, Sugimoto survived the Russo-Japanese war of the Meiji era. Nicknamed “Sugimoto the Immortal” during the war, he now seeks the riches promised by the gold rush in hopes of saving the widowed wife of his now deceased comrade from the war. During his hunt of gold, he finds hints of a hidden stash of gold by corrupt criminals. Partnering with an Ainu girl that saves his life from the harsh climates of the north, they venture into a survival adventure to race against the criminals that seek the hidden stash. Opening and ending
“Winding Road” by MAN WITH A MISSION, now I’ve always been a fan of Man with a mission’s music so it didn’t even cross my mind to hate this song as I find myself singing along and even bobbing my head to this opening as Man with a mission made openings “Raise your flag” for anime Gundam Iron blood orphans and “Seven deadly sins” for The seven deadly sins and I almost feel like “Winding Road” fits the theme of the anime quite well
“Hibana” by THE SIXTH LIE, now to be quite honest, I don’t really listen to ending music, and I’ve only listened to one other song by THE SIXTH LIE which is “Shadow is the light” for A scientific Accelerator.
Hibana is a slow long soothing song that I could get grown used to.
When I first started to watch Golden Kamuy I knew it was going to be different from anything that is out already, I sure did follow Golden Kamuy back when it first aired in April 2018.
Let me first say how brilliant Monica and Ian do a fabulous job with the dub! I defiantly feel the connection between Sugimoto and Asirpa in the first 3 episodes, right from the beginning we some fabulous voice acting.
Going back to the story, following Sugimoto and Asirpa as they try and find the gold and the skins of the escaped convicts and obviously they aren’t the only ones looking and we defiantly meet some sketchy characters, we see some fierce work from the fantastic David Wald and his character Tsurumi who defiantly gives me the creeps every time I look at his half flesh face which gives me a look at how the Japanese represent their history and what might have happened back then to their soldiers, honestly hoping this show has a bit of truth to it.
What I also like is the religion of the Inu in Golden Kamuy as I’ve seen a lot of different religion’s in anime including Fire Force’s “Holy sol Temple”, The Vatican in Trinity Blood and The Church of the walls in Attack on titan but It was nice to see a different kind of Religion as the Inu are a tribe from Hokkaido and from actually giving it a lookup online I’m fascinated to see how many facts are actually true, as I would have been very disappointed if they had made the whole thing up.
Watching from episode 7 onwards we finally see the final players In the game of the search for the gold (at least that’s what they’ve shown us anyway)
Also finding out who Asirpa really is never really made sense but I’m sure it will be explained in the coming seasons.
Seeing the relationship develop between Asirpa and Sugimoto brings the whole show together how a young girl, different from normal Inu women and be as strong as she is, amazes me.
My favourite character so far has to be Shiraishi voiced by Ben Phillips
I can’t wait to see what the next season has in store!
Go ahead and watch Golden Kamuy today
