As a violent storm rages on outside, the death count continues to climb. The Phantomhive household and their eminent guests find they must cooperate in order to solve this mystery before they too fall prey to the mysterious murderer. However, it seems that not even the perfect butler, Sebastian Michaelis, is safe from this horror.

Review

The biggest mistake in this OVA is that it takes place after Book of Circus and before the film Book of the Atlantic, so if you haven’t seen Book of the Circus, some of the two-part OVA won’t make sense unless you know key information from the last season, which are given to us within the first four minutes of the two-hour show.

Despite the major flaw, Book of Murder is a fantastic addition to the Black Butler family, and I feel like it’s attempting to overshadow Season 2’s disaster (if you haven’t seen Season 2, skip it and go straight to Book of Circus).

The main plot revolves around Ciel being forced to host a dinner party at the Queen’s request. Black Butler is set in 1888, in London, during the reign of Queen Victoria. I watch this show regardless of where it is set or what time period it is set in because I enjoy the sense of history and it adds to the mystery.

I loved the many different characters especially the fabulous dedication to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes characters and author.

I’m a huge fan of the anime Detective Conan, and the fact that this OVA has a murder (a locked room murder, to be precise) and the characters have to solve it just adds to the hilarity of the underlying plot. Many Black Butler fans would see the events as a cruel joke, but that just adds to the excitement in the two hours.

If you know what to look out for, you see the small exchanges between Sebastian and Ciel, which also adds to the fun and there were many points that I couldn’t stop myself from laughing about.

Despite the multiple deaths, Ciel’s smiles and smirks are the most eerie bits, and we all know what happens 30 minutes in is highly impossible, which makes it even more fascinating and makes you wonder what else they have planned.

What happens at 40 minutes in makes more sense when the end draws near but this is another reason you need to watch Book of circus because it relates to it pretty much puts a draw back of anyone who has not yet watched Black butler.

At the end the end, The Phantomhive estate gains a new servant and that leads to the events of the movie Book of the Atlantic
